Weather, crowds and prices across Japan, Korea and Taiwan through the year, and how the three destinations differ.
These three destinations sit close together but their weather does not line up. Cherry blossom, typhoon season and the lunar new year holidays land in different places at different times, and they change both the price and the crowds more than any other factor.

The seasons in one table of thumb
- ['Spring - mild, clear, busy. Book early; blossom dates move with the weather.', 'Summer - hot, humid, wet, with typhoons possible late in the season.', 'Autumn - the best balance of weather, colour and manageable crowds.', 'Winter - cold and dry in Japan and Korea; mild and grey in Taiwan, with rain in the north of the island.']
Japan, month by month in short
- ['Jan-Feb - cold, clear, quiet apart from ski areas and winter festivals.', 'Mar-May - blossom moves north; late March in the south, April in the middle, early May in the north.', 'Jun - the rainy stretch; fewer crowds, wetter days.', 'Jul-Aug - hot and humid, festival season, peak domestic travel.', 'Sep-Oct - typhoon risk early, then some of the best weather of the year.', 'Nov-Dec - autumn colour in the south, then cold, bright days.']
Korea, month by month in short
- ['Jan-Feb - properly cold; good for skiing and for indoor culture.', 'Apr-May - the strongest window: blossom in April, clear and mild in May.', 'Jun-Aug - hot, humid, with the heaviest rain in the middle of the summer.', 'Sep-Nov - crisp and clear, with the best autumn colour in October and early November.', 'Dec - cold and dry, with fewer visitors outside the holiday weeks.']
Taiwan, month by month in short
- ['Jan-Mar - cool and damp in the north, warmer and drier in the south.', 'Apr-May - pleasant almost everywhere; a reliable first-trip window.', 'Jun-Sep - hot, with typhoons most likely between midsummer and early autumn.', 'Oct-Dec - the best months: warm days, less rain, comfortable evenings.']
What actually drives the crowds
- ['Public holidays and the lunar new year move millions of people inside the region - transport and hotels sell out first.', 'School holidays in late July and August fill domestic attractions.', 'Blossom and autumn colour are short, unpredictable windows; both are worth planning around but not worth fixing dates a year in advance.']

The best month to go, for each of the three
- ['Late spring and autumn are the safest choices for all three.', 'Summer means heat, humidity and typhoons; winter means cold in Japan and Korea.', 'Holidays and blossom weeks drive prices more than the weather does.', 'Check each destination separately - the three do not share one season.']
Frequently asked questions
Is it worth travelling in the rainy season?
Often yes. Rain is usually heavy but short, hotels cost less, and the main sights are quieter. Pack accordingly and keep a flexible indoor option.
What should I avoid?
The lunar new year travel peak if you have a fixed short trip - transport and accommodation are the most constrained of the year.
When is the cheapest time to go?
Generally the shoulder weeks: after the blossom rush and before summer, or after the summer holidays and before the autumn colour peak.
Can I visit all three in one trip?
Yes - they are short flights apart. Allow at least a week per destination, and use the season you are travelling in to decide the order.
Do I need different equipment for each?
No. A light rain layer and a warm mid-layer covers most of the year in all three; only deep winter in Japan and Korea needs proper cold-weather clothing.
